Evolution of Music ? Whats going on?

“Oh my God! Look at her butt”
My college friend showed me the video of Nicki Minaj‘s “Anaconda“. After hearing the majestic music and the beautiful lyrics ( probably the best this world has ever seen) I began to yell at my friend, “What the muck was that dude? What the muck in heaven’s name was that ?” He told me that was the popular trend these days. I was shocked. I mean really ? The song says “Oh my God, Look at her butt” and people like it. Really ? That is music ? Surely as a man, I might be interested in butt but who in their right mind likes that as a music. And it had about 140 million views on YouTube. Come on, Stairway to Heaven has 47 million views. What the hell is wrong with this world ? Has the definition of music really changed in these past few decades ?

Music used to be a thing that soothes your soul, that makes you wanna cry, that kills you and makes you feel alive again. But is music the same thing now ? No way!
Rhyme a few lines, give that song a beat (probably made from a beat maker), throw in some gorgeous women dancing in provocative poses and you’re good to go. That song will reach number 1 charts in the whole damn world. That song will win you the creative musician of the year award, that song will win you the MTV awards, the Grammy, the EVERYTHING! And the same song will be played in the i-club of my country, where young idiots go to have fun. I don’t judge people instantly but the moment you tell me you like this worst generation of music, you should think again!

I started to listen to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Queen etc and when I listened to these guys, I knew there was no comparison at all. It was like comparing 2+2 with insane derivative problems, the complexity of the universe with girlfriend issues – It was meaningless.

I was not the same 70’s music loving person always. I too in my school days used to listen to stuffs – Rihanna, Drake, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and you name it. I’m not proud of it but still I listened those. Then in college, I found the golden stuff. I started to listen to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Queen etc and when I listened to these guys, I knew there was no comparison at all. It was like comparing 2+2 with insane derivative problems, complexity of the universe with girlfriend issues – It was meaningless. I don’t mean to say all artist are the same but still the level of music, the extension of creativity all has been lost. You don’t need talent to sing a song anymore, there is auto-tune. You don’t need to work in your guitar for hours to create a unique music anymore, there are special effects. Time has changed and so with it, our taste of music too.

From Led Zeppelin to Pantera, from Ramones to Blink-182, from Johnny Cash to Miranda Lambert. Yes, the music has certainly changed. But it hurts when the true music are passed while the less deserving gets the praise. I know they are good artist, they have made a lot of music and are a great band but who the hell says Metallica is better than Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi is the father of metal while Kirk Hammett is merely a child, who thinks System of a Down is better than Pink Floyd, who even thinks Stairway to heaven‘s solo comes second to anything, who compares Taylor Swift with Johnny Cash. I can go on and on with the list. I can say this because I’ve heard Metallica play and Black Sabbath play. I’ve heard Johnny Cash and Taylor Swift. And to be honest, there is nothing to say. Listening to “Shake It off by Taylor Swift” made me lose the shred of respect I still had for her. Evolution of music has not been a thing to be proud of – at least for me.

I guess I belong to the hippie era where a puff of joint and Pink Floyd in your ear was enough for a day. I feel like i don’t belong here, but I cant go back in time and watch Lynyrd Skynyrd concert either. Whatever the others may think, I think the music of nowadays is trash. I just shove my earplugs to the music of Black Sabbath and give a damn to this world. I heard a kid in my college say to the other kid “Dude you should hear ‘Hallowed be thy name‘ of ‘Cradle of filth‘, its awesome! They are like the best metal band in the world”.
I just laughed and went my way. The fool doesn’t even know its an Iron Maiden song.

  1. Loved this article. Pretty much sums up the fact that this generation is a stupid one, and severely lacks taste in music and unfortunately we won’t stop here.
    Good job!
